Thanks a lot. I was also having trouble with 10.04 and the wiki did not help. I’ve switched to 9.10 and trying this right now and will post if it works!

Another little thing I ran into with it recently is that by default, it skips blank lines:

$ head -4 file | nl -n rz -w3 -s\|
001|blah
 
002|blah
003|blah

To number blank lines as well:

$ head -4 file | nl -n rz -ba -w3 -s\|
001|blah
002|
003|blah
004|blah

The syntax of “nl” seems a bit awkward, for me at least, but looks like you could do it like so:

$ cat file | nl -n rz -w3 -s\|
001|blah
002|blah
003|blah
004|blah
005|blah
006|blah
007|blah
008|blah
009|blah
010|blah
011|blah
012|blah
013|blah
014|blah
015|blah
016|blah
017|blah
018|blah
019|blah
020|blah

It seems to use single digits. Is there a way to let it go to double and triples?

I promptly stole and made a bash script out of this (though largely overkill) it comes in handy.

Couldn’t find any package whose name or description matched “boxee”

Thanks for this – Boxee does have a jaunty repository so I used that instead. Adding sources and installing went well. Started up perfectly!

I had already turned of the beeps in the GUI method and the beeps came back after I rebooted (even though the “Play alert sound” tab is off). Not a good way to start the week…. Setting xset -b gave immediate relieve though. Thanks!

A GUI method:

1. Click System > Preferences > Sound
2. Click the “Sounds” tab
3. Uncheck “Play alert sound”

This is a better solution than others I have seen as it is user specific, allowing each user to choose if they want to hear the beep or not.
